One of Nashville's most awarded artists, country superstar Vince Gill recently added four more Grammy Award nominations to the 11 awards he had already received. Gill is now established one of the stellar figures in country music. While still in school, Vince joined the bluegrass group Mountain Smoke. He moved to Louisville in 1975 and joined Bluegrass Alliance with Sam Bush and Dan Crary. In 1979, he demonstrated his vocal, guitar, banjo and fiddle talents with Pure Prairie League and is present on their albums, “Can't Hold Back,” “Firin' Up,” and “Something in the Night.” He began his solo recording career with a six-track mini-album for RCA Records, “Turn Me Loose.”
In 1989, Gill caught fire after joining the MCA Nashville roster. His breathtaking string of chart-topping hits began in 1990. Gill was among the musicians on Patty Loveless' albums and she repaid the compliment by duetting with him on "When I Call Your Name" which was named Single of the Year by the Country Music Association. In 1991, Gill had Top 10 U.S. country chart hits with "Pocket Full of Gold," "Liza Jane" and "Look At You," and was voted Male Vocalist of the Year at the 1991 Country Music Association's Annual Awards Show. In 1992, he went one better when he not only picked up the Male Vocalist of the Year award, but also the award for Song of the Year with "Look At Us," a song he co-wrote with Max D. Barnes. In 1992, additions to his chart successes included "I Still Believe In You" and "Take Your Memory With You." Gill has concentrated on romantic ballads. Although he proved his talent in soul music when he duetted with Gladys Knight on "Ain't Nothing Like The Real Thing."
His duet with Dolly Parton on her incredibly successful "I Will Always Love You" was a U.S. country hit in 1995, after they performed it at the CMA awards. In 1998 Gill released "The Key" which rose to the No. 1 spot on Billboard's Top Country Album chart. No one else in the annals of country music has topped his total of CMA Awards. He has recorded 17 albums, has had 19 Billboard Top 10 hits and is the recipient of numerous awards. Vince Gill is a man who keeps even his deepest and most intense emotions close to the surface. "Losing my dad made remember all the great country records he raised me on," Vince reflects. "This is where my heart is right now; and I let my heart lead me." As he sings in "The Key To Life," his father Stan told him, "it's all for nothin' if you don't stay the same." And those are words that Vince Gill has live by.
